Experiencing the new Oculus Rift VR headset

Happy Sunday from Software Expand! In this week’s edition of Feedback Loop, we talk about the future of Windows Phone, whether it makes sense to build media centers discuss the preferences for metal vs. plastic on smartphones. All that and more past the break the proof of concept. Just because you can do something, should you? Samsung thinks so. Its second experimentally screened phone taps into its hardware R&D and production clout to offer something not many other companies can make. WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM WINDOWS PHONE? And so, following the Galaxy Round, here’s the Galaxy Edge. If you take the basic shape and concept, it’s the spitting image of the curved-screen Youm prototype spied at CES a little less than two years ago. Now, though, it’s a for-real smartphone you can buy. I’ve been testing it out in Japan, where it launched instead of the Note 4, although both the Note 4 and the Note Edge will eventually be available in the US. Fortunately. Galaxy Note Edge is how much it resembles the Note 4 The ability to shrink the likes of Chrome and Google Maps to a popup window and layer it on top of other apps is also useful; I’d love to see something similar on the iPhone 6 Plus. Despite the unusual, curved screen, it still packs all of the good things that made the Note 4 such a strong choice. But bragging rights aside, is there enough of an argument for a curved screen? Should you just get the Note 4 anyway? METAL VS. PLASTIC PHONE BODIES? The exploration of space stands as one of humanity’s greatest achievements. While history has hailed the men and women who reached the cosmos, and those who helped them get there, much of the infrastructure that sent them skyward lies forgotten and dilapidated. [quote_right]Galaxy Note 4 running Android 4.4 KitKat.[/quote_right] And how does Apple’s biggest phone compare to the Note Edge? Well, both remain unwieldy to grip, and the Note Edge is wider. However, the edged screen nuzzles into my hand better and those software tweaks mentioned above give it the advantage. However, just like the stylus, there’s a while before you get the knack of all the little provisions Samsung’s made to ease users into this screen size. Roland Miller has spent nearly half his life chronicling these landmarks before they are lost forever long been obsessed with space as a child, he dreamed of being an astronaut. HARDWARE Its curves are subjective and divisive; my friends and colleagues have offered up reactions ranging from outright bemusement to adoration. The screen looks great, with the punchy contrast and sharpness that’s been a Samsung flagship mainstay for years. We’ll get back to that edge, but it’s the headline part of a 5.6-inch Quad-HD+ display. This means a little chunk of extra screen makes the phone just less than 4mm wider, and around 2mm shorter, than the Note 4. ONE-HANDED USE Both come with software tricks like shrinkable keyboards as well as a new, tiny floating menu that can be stuck to the outer edge of the screen. This duplicates the capacitive button row, which could be a solution of sorts for lefties. I can even make this secondary menu transparent, allowing me to maintain all that screen space. The ability to shrink the likes of Chrome and Google Maps to a popup window and layer it on top of other apps is also useful I’d love to see something similar on the iPhone 6 Plus. SOFTWARE If you’re looking to learn more about the stylus’ uses, I’d advise a quick read of Brad’s Galaxy Note 4 review, because the setup is identical here. Yes, there are TouchWiz bits running on Android 4.4 KitKat, but Samsung continues to clear away unnecessary bloat and options. It’s still a work in progress, though, and I feel the settings menus are particularly obtuse compared to other Android phones — and especially iOS. It takes some getting used to. But let’s focus on what’s different here: that edge. There are two display modes you can flit between: a slender, unassuming bar that can display a customized message and a more substantial column that attempts to offer extra functionality, notifications or context-dependent menus for certain apps, like the camera. The front-facing camera is also a top-end sensor compared to the competition, 3.7 megapixels with an f/1.9 lens. While I’m not a huge selfie taker, you’ll have to ask our Senior Selfie Editor, but I do take a whole lot of photos with my smartphone, so I was interested to see how Samsung’s newest smartphone camera handled. When it’s expanded, the UI is a basic row of icons, which you can navigate with a little swipe. This may look a little unusual, but swishing through the various mini-screens is immensely satisfying. And how does Apple’s biggest phone compare to the Note Edge? Well, both remain unwieldy to grip, and the Note Edge is wider. However, the edged screen nuzzles into my hand better and those software tweaks mentioned above give it the advantage. However, just like the stylus, there’s a while before you get the knack of all the little provisions Samsung’s made to ease users into this screen size. The screen is marginally smaller than the Note 4, despite the cranked-up pixel count. Like the Note 4, text pops a little more, and pictures you take with the 16MP camera are obviously better replicated on the Note Edge’s screen. All told, it’s an excellent camera. The image stabilizing works well on all the neon lights that pepper Tokyo, while even people were neatly captured. There’s some noise, but it compares favorably against older Galaxy phones. Daylight meant effortless captures and some really nice shots, if I say so myself. Focus was swift, and auto white balance seemed to gauge scenes perfectly. If you have a proclivity for HDR, rest assured the Edge does an excellent job there. The shades are still a little...

Syfy and USA Network’s upcoming TV series Chucky revealed.

San Diego’s Comic-Con International streamed a ton of juicy content this year, giving an inside look at what fans can expect to see in Syfy’s rendition of the cult-favorite series. It was announced that the new Chucky series would show Ray’s childhood origin. Lead character and newcomer to the franchise Jake Webber (Zachary Arthur) begs the question of how Chucky ended up the way he did, to which he responds, “Great question. Let me tell you the story of my first time.” Albeit short, the clip that followed showed young Ray slicing a cake with a big butcher knife while wearing a big grin on his face.  Horror fans who grew up with these films have embraced Chucky’s raunchy style in the Child’s Play series. In its effort to dive deeper into the psychology behind Chucky’s madness, the show may end up humanizing the outspoken and outlandish doll in a way viewers haven’t seen yet. It’s unknown if Dourif himself will make an appearance in the series, but it will be interesting to see Ray as a child before he becomes the infamous serial killer. #chucky...

Walmart is rolling out its plan and testing cashier-less stores

A world without traditional checkout lanes might not be such a farfetched idea anymore. Walmart is rolling out its plan and testing the cashier-less store right now. Cashiers are being replaced as ‘hosts.’ It’s a move towards the future of the American multinational retail chain. In the new layout, all 34 registers are always open. There is no such thing as opening or closing a lane, so adapting to changing traffic patterns is much easier. It’s also easy to maintain a safe social distance within the open area because there’s plenty of room to maneuver. On average, it takes 40 hours of cashier training to operate a register. With the new layout, the training takes less than a day, so Hosts can start helping customers much faster. This is the latest in moves from Walmart to adjust to the pandemic and improve its shopping experience. In addition, the retail chain announced that it would streamline its apps to make online shopping more simple for users....

Southeast Development Group Announces 1.1 Billion Master Plan For Jacksonville’s Riverfront

Atkins with SouthEast Development Group today announced its vision for the Riverfront Jacksonville: a comprehensive, multi-phased, mixed-use plan for the Northbank of Downtown Jacksonville. The plan, unveiled in a presentation at the Florida Theatre, would include the former county Courthouse and City Hall Annex sites and the former site of the Jacksonville Landing — a total of about 20 acres of land owned by the city. The proposal by Atkins’ SouthEast Development Group would see a public-private partnership create 15 acres of public green space and 2.3 million square feet of residential, office and retail space along the river between the Times Union Center for the Performing Arts and the Berkman Plaza and Marina. The plans include a 500,000-square-foot exhibition hall where the City Hall annex used to stand. That facility, which the city would own, would be connected to the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront, which Atkins said his development group has been working with. The first phase of the plan — and perhaps the most ambitious — would see the city create some 3,000 parking spots underneath the parkland fronting the river. Riverfront Jacksonville will include: Public Green Space: Approximately 15 acres of expansive riverfront parks and public spaces designed to incorporate programmed experiences and activity nodes, such as a flexible amphitheater, public art, retail and event plazas, and branded golf greens. Park space will ensure development is set back significantly from the edge of the St. Johns River — aligning with recognized best practices in resilient urban design. Resilient Design: Resilience is an essential part of the Riverfront Jacksonville sustainability plan, carefully addressed through the design of the park and open spaces, along with underground parking structures engineered to withstand and recover from severe weather events. In coastal storms and flooding, subterranean parking trays will serve as stormwater vaults and pump stations.  The Bend: Of principal importance to the master plan is the eventual park design on the western parcels.  The Riverfront Jacksonville plan features plentiful public amenities, such as pedestrian walkways, gardens, and larger landscape features, that interface effectively with Buildings One, Two, and Three — ensuring the park is fully activated and accessible to a variety of visitors and populations. “The Bend” follows fluid lines the same way the St. Johns River flows along its banks, with signature monumental artwork made of teak that anchors the park and provides shade for visitors. Building One: A sustainable split-level, mixed-use building will house 120,000 square feet of next-generation commercial office space with ground-level restaurants and retail. An open corridor design will provide unobstructed views of the river along Laura Street. Building Two: A 14-level residential condominium tower will add 100 custom units to Downtown’s housing inventory, all with panoramic views of Downtown and the St. Johns River. The building will include a state-of-the-art wellness center and retail spaces at the plaza level. Building Three: A 208-room destination hotel and two-level interactive retail food hall called “30 North” (named for Jacksonville’s coordinates) will connect with a dynamic outdoor space designed to support year-round music and community events. Buildings Four and Five: Innovative commercial space designed within WELL health safety and LEED certification standards will provide the latest in “Healthy Environment” technologies, including retractable outer glass walls that create versatile indoor/outdoor work environments. Building Six: As a future phase, the site of the Hyatt Regency Hotel’s current parking structure would be reimagined as a blend of multifamily apartments and residential condominiums. Building Seven: A contemporary, forward-thinking Exhibition, Entertainment & Technology Center will re-energize the convention-oriented Hyatt Regency Hotel. Space will feature flexible design elements, virtual technologies, and adaptive spaces, alongside retail and entertainment orientations on the ground level and rooftop spaces programmed 365 days a year to enhance the ever-evolving visitor experience. The team SouthEast Development has put together for the proposal includes Goldman Sachs and Piper Sandler & Co., which would handle financing the $536 million in public investment and $559 million in private investment called for by the plan. The Riverfront Jacksonville will be the largest public-private partnership in the history of Jacksonville. It will generate substantial economic benefits and public revenues for the City over the coming decades. Video Concept below: To learn more, visit jaxriverfront.com. || www.tridence.com...
