A (A.I.) startup called DoNotPay has created what it claims to be the world's first robot lawyer, and it will be put to the test next month in an unprecedented court case.

The AI legal assistant, which runs on a smartphone, will listen to court arguments in real-time before instructing the defendant on how to respond via headphones.

The case is said to involve a traffic ticket, but the exact location and details of the case have not been disclosed.

According to the company's founder and CEO, Joshua Browder, a Stanford University-educated computer scientist, DoNotPay originally launched in 2015 as a chatbot that provided legal advice to consumers dealing with late fees or fines, but it pivoted to AI in 2020.

Browder stated that it took a long time to train the AI assistant on case law covering a wide array of topics and to ensure that the app adhered to the truth.

He went on to say that his ultimate goal is to have the app replace some lawyers altogether in order to save defendants money.

In addition to assisting in a court of law, DoNotPay promises to allow users to "fight corporations, beat bureaucracy, and sue anyone at the press of a button." If the defendant loses the case, DoNotPay has agreed to cover any fines.
