Review of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – Chicago Broadway Production (2.5/5 stars)

As someone who adores the world of Harry Potter, I went into Harry Potter and the Cursed Child hoping to be swept away into a world of magic and wonder. While the storyline had its interesting twists and turns, tapping into the deep bond between Harry and his son, Albus, the execution of this production in Chicago left much to be desired.

The performances, while serviceable, lacked the emotional depth needed to carry such an iconic narrative. The chemistry between the characters felt flat, and at times, the dialogue—meant to tug at your heartstrings—came off as stiff and uninspired. The cast seemed disconnected, almost as if they were more focused on hitting their marks rather than truly embodying the magic of J.K. Rowling’s universe.

Additionally, the dance routines interspersed throughout the show felt oddly placed and uninspired. These moments, which should have added energy and momentum to the performance, felt more like filler than anything integral to the story. The choreography lacked the creativity or spark that might have elevated the scenes, leaving them to fall into mediocrity.

The one saving grace of this production was the set design and magical effects. The props and visual effects were nothing short of spectacular, with every spell and transformation executed flawlessly. From the flick of a wand to the visual spectacle of time travel sequences, these elements were truly the highlight. If only the performances had matched the magic on stage.

Ultimately, while the set and effects kept the show visually entertaining, they couldn't make up for the overall lackluster performances and uninspired dance routines. For die-hard fans of the wizarding world, it may still be worth the trip—but don’t expect to leave feeling as enchanted as you should.
